A maidservant is a female employed in domestic service. Maids perform typical domestic chores such as cooking, ironing, washing, cleaning the house, walking the family dog, and taking care of children in normal course. But our maid is of a different kind. She is ‘Mohini’ almost of my age. She calls my papa as ‘Baabaa’ and to my mama as ‘Maa’ and me as ‘Didi’. I feel very happy hearing the word ‘didi’ sleeping on my bed early in the morning. As a single child I usually get reprimanded either by mama for getting up late in the morning or by papa for not sitting with the books! And when I see Mohini, a feeling of friendliness vibrates me. I have been watching this young girl for last 7 years working hand in hand with my mama. She is a very nice, clean and good looking simple girl. At times mama is heard shouting at her for coming late and I simply watch her not paying any heed to it and start her work smilingly as if nothing

happened. And mama murmurs “ yaku kichhi farak padibani” and immediately papa would emerge from no where and is also heard shouting at mama “ kahinki pilata upare chilauchu?”. This is the everyday routine affaires at my house relating to Mohini, which I enjoy much without letting my mama know about it.She is staying with her five elder sisters and her parents at a slum area about 2 km away from my house. Me and my papa visit her house during her birthday and Durgapuja every year. I take her along with me whenever I visit my Baba’s House (Elder brother of my papa) and other relatives staying in Bhubaneswar as mama supports it saying “ don’t go alone driving scooty in busy traffic, take mohini with you”. She becomes so happy to accompany me wherever I go and keep narrating everywhere the experience she had with me.The very thought of Mohini gives me immense pleasure as to how good girl she is but I get saddened next moment when I compare me with her. Though she is a girl like me, why she does not have the facility I have in my life….disturbs me at times. Why there is so much of discrimination between to girls? After coming in contact with Mohini I learnt the positive aspect of good human relation.Please join with me to wish Mohini a good life ahead.
